State govt revokes internet ban following improvement in Garo Hills

The Meghalaya government on Wednesday lifted the suspension of internet services across all five districts in Garo Hills, following a review of the law and order situation, officials said. The ban had been imposed as a precaution after incidents of violence in the region, including clashes, vandalism, and property damage in Tura, which resulted in the deaths of two people. The unrest was sparked by a GHADC notification barring non-tribals from participating in the tribal council elections.

An order from the Home (Political) Department stated that the earlier March 11 notification suspending mobile data and internet services in West, East, South, North, and South West Garo Hills districts has now been revoked with immediate effect. Officials said the decision was taken after the situation showed signs of improvement in recent days.

The revocation has brought relief to residents, businesses, and institutions in the Garo Hills region. Meanwhile, the state government had postponed the April 10 elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council until October, citing the need to restore normalcy and ensure a conducive environment for the democratic process.
