Dhormonath Ch. Sangma, MDC from Naguapara, was elected as the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council on Monday. The transition came in the wake of Albinush R. Marak resigning as CEM of GHADC, hours before a special session scheduled to discuss a no-confidence motion against him. The motion was backed iming that Marak had lost majority support. Following the resignation, Sangma was elected as the new CEM. The special session at the District Council Hall will now focus on forming a new Executive Committee. Notably, amid unrest in the Garo Hills over the participation of non-tribals in tribal council elections, the Meghalaya Cabinet on Monday extended the tenure of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council by six months.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said the decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired virtually by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, with the extension of the current GHADC House as the sole agenda. The development follows the deaths of at least two persons in the violence in Tura and nearby areas last week after the GHADC issued a notification prohibiting non-tribal candidates from contesting the council election, which was earlier scheduled for April 10 but deferred after the unrest in Garo Hills.
