Residents of the plains belt in the Garo Hills are seeking clarification from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders regarding their claims that most Bengali-speaking Muslims in the area are from Bangladesh. They described these allegations as irresponsible and misleading. This demand for clarification arises in the context of rising tensions related to the now-deferred elections for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), which led to a curfew and suspension of mobile internet services in parts of West Garo Hills.
The residents urged the BJP to specify the locations of alleged Bangladeshi residents instead of making broad accusations against the community, especially as elections approach. They argued that such statements seem aimed at misleading the majority community and inciting unnecessary tensions for political benefit.
While expressing respect for the GHADC and its role in safeguarding tribal interests, they insisted that genuine citizens, long-time residents like their families, should not be labeled as foreigners. They invited BJP leaders to visit the plains belt and directly identify any supposed Bangladeshis, emphasizing the importance of promoting peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among all communities rather than fostering suspicion and division. The residents called on political parties to concentrate on development and authentic issues instead of creating communal discord.
