On Sunday, Conrad Sangma, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, convened a review meeting with senior officials to evaluate the extent of the damage caused by a severe hailstorm that affected several regions in the state, particularly around Tura. Key attendees included the Chief Secretary, the Commissioner and Secretary of the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, as well as the Deputy Commissioners from the impacted districts.

During the meeting, Sangma emphasized the importance of closely monitoring the on-ground situation and ensuring that immediate relief and assistance are extended to households affected by the storm. He instructed district administrations to expedite the restoration of critical services like electricity and water supply.

The hailstorm struck Tura and its nearby areas around 3 AM on Sunday, resulting in significant destruction of homes, vehicles, and crops. Reports indicated that this storm represented the third spell of severe weather to hit the region that night. Residents noted that the hailstones were exceptionally large, with some reaching sizes comparable to golf balls. The fierce hailstorm persisted for approximately 20 minutes, causing extensive damage to the town and surrounding localities.

Numerous tin-roofed houses were left compromised after the heavy hail managed to puncture roofing sheets, while several vehicles parked in open areas without protective coverage also suffered damage. Officials have been instructed to stay alert and work in coordination with local authorities to carry out a comprehensive assessment of the damage and ensure timely assistance for those impacted by the hailstorm.
