C. H. Vijayashankar on Friday inaugurated a Mobile Food Processing Unit (MPU) designed to help small and marginal farmers in the Northeast process their farm produce at their doorstep. The facility was launched at Lok Bhavan in the presence of senior officials and representatives from scientific and government institutions. The innovative unit has been jointly developed by North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysuru. The initiative aims to strengthen food processing infrastructure in the Northeastern region and improve value addition for farmers.
The Mobile Food Processing Unit acts as a “processing on wheels” facility, equipped with small-scale processing equipment capable of handling fruits and vegetables directly at farm locations. The technology enables farmers to convert fresh produce into processed products, reducing post-harvest losses and increasing income opportunities.
Speaking at the event, Governor Vijayashankar highlighted the importance of technology-driven solutions in transforming agriculture in the region. He noted that such initiatives can help farmers maximize the value of their produce while promoting sustainable rural development.
Officials said the MPU will provide a flexible, multi-purpose platform for processing farm produce, particularly benefiting small and marginal farmers who often lack access to food processing facilities. By bringing the technology directly to villages, the unit is expected to improve product output and expand market opportunities for farmers.
The project reflects a collaborative effort between research institutions and government agencies to promote innovation and service delivery in the Northeast. Representatives from the Directorate of Food Processing, Meghalaya, the Meghalaya Natural and Organic Farming Society for Livelihood and Innovation in Agriculture, and other partner organizations attended the event and welcomed the initiative.
They emphasized that the project could become a model for similar interventions across the region, helping strengthen institutional capacity while supporting rural livelihoods.
The programme concluded with a guided walkthrough of the MPU facility and a ceremonial flag-off by the Governor. Farmers and attendees were briefed on the features of the mobile unit and its expected impact on agricultural productivity and income generation in the Northeastern states.
Officials expressed optimism that the initiative will play a key role in modernizing agricultural practices and promoting sustainable development for farming communities in the region.
