Curfew has been extended in the violence-hit West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya till 6 am on Sunday. It was enforced across the district, with relaxation from 9 am to 3 pm on Saturday to procure essential items, according to an order issued by District Magistrate Vibhor Aggarwal.

Meanwhile, the curfew imposed in the East Garo Hills district will continue until further orders, the officials said. Curfew was imposed after two people were killed in violence linked to a controversial notification barring non-tribal people from contesting the elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) on March 9. Army personnel had to be deployed in trouble-torn areas to restore peace.

With no fresh incidents of violence reported in the past couple of days, the situation is limping back to normalcy with security forces maintaining strict vigil.
