Tura MP Meets Governor, Seeks Amendment to Autonomous District Council Rules

Tura MP Saleng A. Sangma emphasized the importance of amending the Autonomous District Council Rules to resolve issues related to non-tribal participation in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections. During a meeting with Governor C.H. Vijaya Shankar in Shillong, Sangma discussed the situation in Garo Hills, the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, and concerns about Rohingya infiltration. He pointed out the absence of specific rules on non-tribal participation in GHADC elections, advocating for discussions on enacting appropriate laws. Sangma plans to return to Garo Hills for stakeholder consultations. He urged the Governor to establish security camps in areas vulnerable to tribal attacks and highlighted the need to protect tribal rights for peace. Additionally, he suggested that recent unrest may have political motives and asserted the necessity for revising outdated practices. The Governor agreed to deliberate on necessary amendments and stressed adherence to rules and constitutional processes.
