A mob attacked a team of the Meghalaya Police near Wajidpur–Shikrawa village in Nuh district of Haryana when they attempted to take an accused in an ATM robbery case into custody, officials said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on the Shikrawa–Bhadas Road under the jurisdiction of the Nuh Police Station. One police personnel was injured during the attack.

Police have registered an attempt-to-murder case against 12 named and several unidentified individuals who allegedly tried to free the accused, Rahul Khan.

According to the Nuh Police, special teams have been formed to arrest those involved in the assault on the Meghalaya Police team, and further investigation is underway.

The Meghalaya Police had reached Haryana to escort Rahul Khan, a resident of Wajidpur village, who is wanted in several ATM theft cases across Delhi, Meghalaya, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

Officials said a crowd of around 20 to 30 people, including women, surrounded the police vehicle. The mob allegedly pelted stones, tried to snatch the vehicle keys and attempted to seize official weapons in an effort to free the accused.

Police personnel fired in self-defence to disperse the mob. During the clash, a local youth identified as Tarif Khan sustained a bullet injury in his leg and was admitted to a hospital. His condition is reported to be stable.

Ayush Yadav, Additional Superintendent of Police of Nuh, said the accused suddenly grabbed the steering wheel of the police vehicle and tried to overturn it in an apparent attempt to escape from custody. Members of the crowd then allegedly attempted to seize the vehicle keys and weapons from the police team.

Forensic experts later inspected the site and recovered empty cartridges and blood samples. Police teams are currently conducting raids to arrest the remaining suspects.

Authorities are also monitoring social media platforms to prevent the spread of rumours regarding the incident. Officials said the Meghalaya Police resorted to aerial firing in self-defence to bring the situation under control.

The Meghalaya Police had travelled to Haryana to take Rahul Khan into custody in connection with an ATM robbery case registered at the Mawngap Police Station in East Khasi Hills district. Separate cases against him are also registered at the Dwarka Police Station and Dabri Police Station in Delhi.
