On Thursday, the East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya experienced a temporary relaxation of curfew from 8 am to 11 am, following unrest linked to protests over the nomination process for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections. Deputy Commissioner RP Marak confirmed that this measure was intended to allow residents to procure essential goods while security forces maintained heightened vigilance in sensitive areas. In light of the unrest, the state government also suspended mobile internet services across five districts in the Garo Hills to mitigate the spread of misinformation and to uphold law and order. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma urged all citizens, particularly those in the Garo Hills, to prioritize peace and stability during this tense period. He stated that the government had resolved to postpone the GHADC elections and would engage with political parties and stakeholders to address the underlying issues collaboratively.
