The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) has deferred exams for two papers of the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examination in the West Garo Hills district as a precautionary measure in the wake of clashes between tribal and non-tribal groups over the nomination process for the GHADC polls.

According to the board, the Music and Anthropology papers of the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examination scheduled for March 11 and March 12 have been deferred in the district.

“The HSSLC examinations scheduled for March 11 (Music) and March 12 (Anthropology) stand cancelled for West Garo Hills only. The same will be rescheduled on dates to be notified later,” said T. R. Laloo, Director of Accreditation and Controller of Examinations of M. Bose.

The examinations in other districts of Meghalaya will continue as per schedule, he added.

Over 29,000 students are appearing for the HSSLC examinations conducted by the board this year.

According to officials, the decision to postpone the two exams was taken as a precautionary measure after curfew was imposed in parts of the district, which continues to be on the boil following incidents of violence and deaths of two persons in alleged police firing.

Notably, violence erupted between tribal and non-tribal groups over the nomination process for local council polls in the district.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya government on Wednesday decided to postpone the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections in view of the current tense situation in Garo Hills.

In a video circulated by the Chief Minister’s Office on Wednesday, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that the state government has decided to postpone the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, which were earlier scheduled on April 10, 2026.
