The Meghalaya government has announced the indefinite postponement of elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), originally scheduled for April 10. This decision follows violent incidents triggered by a controversial notification that prohibited non-tribal individuals from participating in the elections. In response to the unrest, which resulted in two fatalities, a curfew was implemented and internet services were suspended on Tuesday. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma stated that the government’s choice to delay the elections considers the current situation and the sentiments of the public. He indicated that further discussions will take place to determine the next steps in this process, underscoring a careful approach to the unfolding events surrounding the GHADC elections.
