Security arrangements have been strengthened ahead of a public gathering called by the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) at Motphran in Shillong on Wednesday. The organisation has announced the meeting as a show of solidarity with the Achik (Garo) community, who have been protesting against what they describe as rising illegal immigration from Bangladesh.
According to CoMSO leaders, the issue of alleged infiltration threatens the state’s demographic balance, land rights, and constitutional safeguards meant for indigenous communities. In a statement, the organisation said the gathering aims to demonstrate collective unity among indigenous groups in protecting their land, culture, and identity.
SP Dewansh Pandey assured that sufficient security measures have been put in place to ensure the meeting proceeds peacefully. He added that the police have adequate manpower and resources to maintain law and order in Shillong and surrounding areas, and that authorities remain prepared to respond swiftly to any untoward incidents.
