Meghalaya Governor Stresses Women’s Empowerment for Strong Society

The Social Welfare Department of Meghalaya celebrated International Women’s Day at Lok Bhavan, Shillong, marking the 11th anniversary of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme. The event, themed “Give to Gain,” was organized by the State Sankalp Hub for Empowerment of Women in collaboration with several government departments. It was attended by notable figures including Adviser Paul Lyngdoh, MLA Santa Mary Shylla, and various women achievers. Governor C. H. Vijayashankar emphasized the importance of women’s empowerment and equal opportunities for societal development, highlighting the achievements of the BBBP initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed at protecting and promoting the welfare of the girl child. He reviewed the progress made and called for renewed commitments to enhance women’s well-being. The Governor mentioned the low representation of women in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, advocating for a proposed 33% reservation to boost their participation in governance. He also flagged the issue of teenage pregnancy as a critical concern, affecting the health and future of young girls and underscoring the need for awareness, education, and community support. The event concluded with the recognition of women achievers from diverse sectors, recognizing their contributions to society.
