Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced plans for extensive high-end tourism infrastructure projects aimed at transforming the state into a prominent cultural and experiential destination. Key among these projects is the iconic Monolith Towers, planned for New Shillong’s Mawkhanu area, which will stand at 123 meters, positioning them as the second tallest structures in India after the Statue of Unity. The towers will serve as a modern tourist hub equipped with elevators, restaurants, and a circular glass walkway that offers visitors breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
The innovative project aims to include cutting-edge lighting technology, featuring nightly laser light shows that narrate the stories, culture, and traditions of Meghalaya. The Monolith Tower Complex, designed by INI Design Studio, will cover approximately 213.8 acres and aims to be a combined tourism, cultural, and ecological hub that is inspired by ancestral Khasi and Jaintia monoliths, known locally as Mawbynna.
Officials have detailed that the complex will include five immersive galleries focused on showcasing the state’s diverse natural and cultural identity, which includes themes like rain, caves, living root bridges, tribal life, and local flora and fauna. Additional features will include a 72-meter sky bridge linking the towers, elevated dining experiences, and various visitor facilities.
Sangma further elaborated that the Monolith Towers are a part of a larger infrastructure initiative aimed at mitigating congestion in Shillong while simultaneously establishing new tourism zones throughout the state. Alongside these towers, other development projects include a Rs 51-crore skywalk and tourist hub at Mawkdok—the nation’s longest cantilever structure—a Rs 30-crore Tribal Heritage Experience Centre at Mandalgre, an eco-resort project at Sakaladuma, and a Rain and Bamboo Museum at Mawsynram.
