The Assembly on Thursday expressed concern over shortage of police manpower and the alleged deployment of personnel on non-policing duties, with several legislators urging the government to take urgent steps to address gaps in the police department of the state.

Raising the question during the Question Hour at the ongoing budget session, VPP MLA from Nongkrem, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, while referring to data provided by the Home Department, pointed out a significant gap between sanctioned and actual strength of police personnel across police stations and outposts. He noted that many police stations are facing severe manpower shortages and sought clarification on the police-to-population ratio recommended by the Bureau of Police Research and Development.

Basaiawmoit further asked what steps the government would take to bridge the gap, stating that inadequate manpower was affecting the functioning of police stations in several areas.TMC MLA from Nongthymai, Charles Pyngrope, raised the issue of recurring understaffing and suggested increasing the sanctioned strength beyond existing norms so that vacancies arising from retirement or unforeseen circumstances do not disrupt operations.
