The death toll from the dynamite explosion in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills has risen to 30, following the deaths of three more injured workers. Authorities have intensified their crackdown on illegal mining activities, seizing illegally extracted coal from various locations and dismantling makeshift camps associated with these operations. FIRs have been registered, and compensation of ₹24 lakh has been provided to the families of eight victims, with additional compensation pending receipt of necessary documents. Prohibitory orders have been imposed to ensure public safety, urging residents to cooperate and avoid hazardous areas.
The search and rescue operation at the explosion site concluded after no additional bodies were found, following extensive efforts by multiple rescue teams. Investigations reveal a large-scale illegal mining operation employing over 200 migrant laborers, raising concerns about regulatory compliance and oversight failures. Allegations have surfaced regarding the involvement of local officials and law enforcement in facilitating these illegal operations. Authorities are conducting ongoing investigations to establish accountability amid these serious claims.
