87th meeting of Brahmaputra Board convened at Shillong

The 87th Meeting of the Brahmaputra Board was held today under the chairmanship of Dr. Ranbir Singh, Chairman, Brahmaputra Board at Courtyard by Marriott Hotel in Shillong.
The meeting was attended by members comprising senior officials from the Central and State Governments of all the Northeastern States and West Bengal. The meeting focused on reviewing ongoing programmes and discussing strategic initiatives related to integrated water resources management, flood and erosion control and institutional strengthening in the Brahmaputra and Barak river basins.
The decisions taken in the 83rd meeting of the standing comitee of Brahmaputra Board held on January 30, 2026 and February 7, 2026, were ratified and project proposals concering Comprehensive assessment of Riverbank Erosion and Prioritization of Mitigation Strategies for the Brahmaputra River Basin; Cross-Section Survey, Geodetic Survey and Investigation for determining the drainage Map, Calculating the Physiographic Parameters & various longitudinal profiles of Jiadhal river in the state of Arunachal Pradesh; Preparation of DPR for Desilting of Baguwa Cherra from Satero Miar Howur to Manu River of Birchandra Nagar GP under Chandipur RD Block & Construction of Sluice Gate for regulating water flow from Satero Miar Howur to Manu River; Preparation of DPR for measures to mitigate the problem of Flood and Bank erosion in 13 Nos. Vulnerable sites of river Barak, Silchar (Cachar), Assam, Development / Renovation of Local Pond at Inamung Pat, Imphal East District, Manipur; Carrying out activities and other programmes under Swacchata during FY 2026-27; Carrying out field survey for mathematical modelling study of Majuli island for DPR preparation of protection measures under Phase- VI works; Updation of Master Plan of Majuli Island; Landscape Development of Basistha Riverfront Adjacent to Brahmaputra Board Campus, Guwahati, etc, were approved in the meeting.
Board also approved the detailed allocation of budget estimate and Annual Action plan of Brahmaputra Board for the Year 2026-27.
Presentations on the status of handing over of completed projects carried out by Brahmaputra Board and Standard Operating Procedure (SoP)  for preparation of Master plans were made for appraisal of the Members.
It has also been deciced to include three master plans viz – Dibang-Disang, Noa- Dihing and Rangit Master Plans totalling the number of master plans identified by Brahmaputra Board to 76.
Members from State Goverments shared the action taken on decisions made in the review meeting of Secretary DoWR, RD and GR on December 12, 2025, and the visit to Majuli Island on December 10, 2025. The member from State Goverments also discussed about schemes taken up in their respective states.
The Chairman reiterated the Brahmaputra Board’s commitment towards supporting the basin states for effective and sustainable water resource management across the region.
The next Board Meeting (88th Meeting) of Brahmaputra Board will be held in Guwahati.
