Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has ordered stringent action against those responsible for a dynamite explosion at an illegal coal mine in the Mynsyngat area of East Jaintia Hills district. The explosion occurred around 11 am, leading to the deaths of 18 individuals and injuring one, who has been transferred to Ialong Civil Hospital in Jowai. Sangma emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal mining, insisting that all miners must possess valid mining licenses amid the shift towards scientific mining practices in the state.

The Chief Minister highlighted that perpetrators of such illegal activities will face strict consequences and will not be allowed to evade justice. The incident took place in a remote area approximately 25 km from Khliehriat, which is challenging to access due to difficult terrain, requiring nearly three hours to reach by four-wheel-drive vehicles.

In response to the tragedy, teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, including the Inspector General of Police for the Eastern Range, and representatives from the Mining Department and local administration have been dispatched to the site. A comprehensive investigation will take place to identify the illegal activities conducted, determine the causes of the dynamite blast, and hold the responsible parties accountable.

Cabinet Ministers Lahkmen Rymbui and Wailadmiki Shylla are set to visit the site on Friday, while Sangma and Deputy Chief Ministers maintain ongoing communication with the district administration and police to ensure effective management of the situation.
