The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved amendments to the Meghalaya Outstanding Sportsman Direct Appointment Policy, as announced by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. These amendments, which were decided six to seven months ago, are intended to benefit sportspersons. The Cabinet has also approved the draft Meghalaya Outstanding Sportsmen Direct Appointment Service Rules, which will establish a special cadre for medal-winning sportspersons from selected prestigious tournaments including the Olympics, National Games, and South Asian Games. This cadre will be tailored to individual athletes and their positions, and will cease to exist upon their retirement, ensuring that service promotions for other departmental staff remain unaffected. Furthermore, the Cabinet clarified the procedure for the 2 percent reservation for sportspersons, indicating that the sports department will now utilize an online application system to certify eligible athletes, thereby formalizing a previously ambiguous process.
