Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee has condemned the authorities following the tragic death of at least 18 laborers in a suspected explosion at an illegal coal mine located in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district. Referring to the incident as a “horrific explosion,” Banerjee criticized the “criminal apathy” among those responsible for governance, alleging that the workers were placed in “death traps” due to factors such as poverty, exploitation, and a lack of regulatory enforcement. He argued that the continuation of illegal mining operations is made possible only through “political protection, administrative silence, and systemic corruption.” Banerjee directly implicated the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) government in Meghalaya, asserting that the “blood of these workers stains the hands” of the authorities in power. He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased, while calling for stringent action against all parties involved, which includes both mine operators and any officials who may have facilitated the illegal mining activities. The explosion transpired at an illegal rat-hole coal mine, and rescue and recovery efforts are currently underway.
