The West Garo Hills district administration has implemented a ban on soil digging and the alteration or misuse of protected structures along a 15-km stretch of the Wadagokgre archaeological site to safeguard it from encroachment and environmental damage. This decision is a response to illegal settlers occupying land protected under the Assam Ancient Monuments and Records Act and the 6th Schedule of the Constitution. The Deputy Commissioner emphasized that this area, which includes historical sites and a four-meter preservation buffer zone, is officially protected. Reports indicate significant encroachment has already occurred, with settlers damaging ancient stupas and fortification walls through heavy machinery use. Additionally, the site has been in the spotlight due to illegal stone quarrying, culminating in recent violent incidents, including the death of anACHIK group member during a conflict with those involved in illegal activities in the vicinity.
