Mawlynnong, Asia’s Cleanest Village in Meghalaya, to Be Closed to Tourists on Sundays

Estimated read time 1 min read

Mawlynnong, recognized as Asia’s cleanest village in Meghalaya, will implement a significant change beginning January 2026, as it is set to close its doors to all one-day tourists on Sundays. This decision, communicated by the village council (Dorbar Shnong), stems from the observation that villagers engage in religious services on Sundays, making it impractical to provide adequate hospitality and services to visitors on that day. Consequently, all tourism-related activities—including services at restaurants, shops, stalls, and public toilets—will be suspended on Sundays. However, this closure does not affect visitors who are already staying in guest houses or homestays during the week who extend their stay through Sunday; they will be allowed to remain. Additionally, those wishing to check in for overnight stays on Sunday nights will also be exempt from the ban. The village will remain open to tourists from Monday to Saturday, ensuring that the natural charm and cleanliness of Mawlynnong continues to be showcased during those days.
