Meghalaya Police have initiated an investigation concerning a threatening poster discovered in Tura, which demands that residents vacate their lands in West Garo Hills. The poster, explicitly referencing the Islamic State (ISIS-K), cautioned the Garo community living in Phubari, Rajabala, Tikrikilla, Selsella, Garobadha, and Turisori to leave their plots by 2027 or face repercussions. A senior police officer remarked that efforts are underway to identify the origin and the individuals responsible for this intimidating message, with the contents undergoing verification for authenticity.
In response to this troubling incident, Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has called for an immediate investigation, labeling the situation as serious and underscoring the government’s commitment to preventing such occurrences in the future. He indicated a willingness to involve central agencies if necessary. This incident occurs amidst escalating tensions in the region, particularly following the recent murder of Dilseng M. Sangma, a member of the ACHIK NGO and an environmental activist, during a site visit to a stone quarry in Rajabala earlier in the month.
