Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s absence from the Republic Day 2026 celebrations has drawn strong criticism from the Opposition Congress, which has sought clarification over his non-participation in key state events. Congress working President Deborah Marak said on Tuesday that, as the head of the government, the chief minister should have been presented to take the salute. She pointed out that he was not seen at official functions in either the Khasi Hills or Garo Hills regions.
Marak criticized Sangma’s absence, saying it gave the impression that he was taking both the national occasion and the people of the state lightly. Questioning his whereabouts, she remarked, “We heard the Chief Minister was roaming, but as CM, it was his responsibility to take the salute.” Meanwhile, Meghalaya Governor C.H. Vijayashankar took the salute at the main ceremony in Shillong, while Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas Sangma presided over the Republic Day function in Tura. Fueling further speculation, the chief minister did not post any updates on his social media platforms about attending Republic Day events.
