The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will convene its Budget Session from February 16 to February 27, 2026, with the presentation of the State Budget scheduled for February 20. The decision on the session’s timetable was taken at a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) held on January 27. According to officials familiar with the proceedings, the session will run for ten days and is expected to be busy, with important financial and policy-related matters lined up for discussion. Out of the total sitting days, seven days have been earmarked for government business, while three days will be devoted to private members’ business. This arrangement reflects the Assembly’s plan to balance legislative priorities with issues raised by individual members.

The BAC meeting was chaired by Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma. The meeting was also attended by Deputy Chief Minister and Minister in charge of Parliamentary Affairs Prestone Tynsong. Their presence underlined the importance of the session, particularly as it includes the presentation and discussion of the annual budget. Leader of the Opposition Mukul Sangma and MLA Paul Lyngdoh participated in the BAC meeting through online mode. Senior officials from the Parliamentary Affairs Department and the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat were also present and took part in the discussions related to the session’s planning and conduct.

Officials said that the legislative calendar has been drawn up keeping in mind the need for detailed debate on budgetary allocations and other key issues. The Budget Session is considered one of the most important sittings of the Assembly, as it sets the financial roadmap for the state for the coming year. To ensure that all listed business is completed smoothly, the House may sit for extended hours if required. Special arrangements have been made for the day on which the Supplementary Demand for Grants will be taken up. On that day, the proceedings will continue until 3 pm to allow sufficient time for discussion and clarification.
