Artistes from Kyrgyzstan performed traditional songs and indigenous musical performances to enthral the audience on the opening day of the 11th India International Dance and Music Festival, held at the U Soso Tham Auditorium in Shillong on Thursday.
The festival is being organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Zonal Office North East, in collaboration with the state government’s Department of Arts and Culture.
The inaugural programme was formally opened by Adviser to the State government’s Social Welfare Department, Paul Lyngdoh, in the presence of ICCR Director N. Munish Singh, ICCR Deputy Director General Manisha Swami, and other invited guests.
Speaking to the media, Paul Lyngdoh said it is encouraging that Shillong has been chosen as one of the six cities across India to host the festival, which he said underscores Meghalaya’s rich cultural heritage and its reputation as a centre for music and dance.
Lyngdoh further observed that several traditional musical instruments from Kyrgyzstan closely resemble indigenous Khasi instruments such as the duitara, mieng and the sound produced by the ksing.
Along with Shillong, the festival is also being held in New Delhi, Bangalore, Baroda, Ahmedabad, Jammu and Chandigarh.
A Musical Ensemble from Burkina Faso and renowned Fusion Rock Band from Maldives 20fus will be performing at U Soso Tham Auditorium on Friday evening.
