East Jaintia Hills Court Awards Life Imprisonment in Kidnapping-for-Ransom Case; Verdicts Delivered in Two Other Serious Cases

A special court in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district has sentenced a man to life imprisonment after convicting him in a kidnapping-for-ransom case, bringing to a close a matter that had been under investigation and trial for more than a decade. Special Judge B. Khriam found Sanjay Das guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 50,000. The conviction relates to a case registered at Khliehriat Police Station in 2012 under Section 364(A) of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with kidnapping for ransom.

The investigation was led by Inspector L. Lyngkhoi, and a charge sheet was filed on July 28, 2014. After a prolonged trial, the court delivered its verdict earlier this month, concluding a case that had remained pending for nearly 12 years. The conviction was announced by the Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills district, in an official press release dated January 15, 2026. On the same day, the court also delivered verdicts in two other serious criminal cases.

In a murder case, Ramesh Dkhar was sentenced to life imprisonment under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and fined Rs 10,000. The case was registered at Khliehriat Women Police Station in 2020 and investigated by Women Police Inspector O. Tyngkan. The charge sheet was filed on March 31, 2021.

In another case, Apurba Das was convicted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and sentenced to a total of eight years of rigorous imprisonment. He was awarded five years under Section 10 of the POCSO Act with a fine of Rs 10,000, and three years under Section 8 with a fine of Rs 5,000. This case was registered in 2022 at Khliehriat Women Police Station and investigated by Sub-Inspector O. Nongtdu, with the charge sheet submitted on February 15, 2023. All three convictions were announced by the office of the Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills district, Khliehriat, Meghalaya.
