Meghalaya–Bangladesh Border Under Constant Watch: CM Conrad Sangma

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday said Meghalaya’s 443-km international boundary with Bangladesh is under constant surveillance, with all security agencies maintaining a high level of alertness.
While border management is primarily the responsibility of the Centre and the Border Security Force (BSF), Sangma said the state government has taken all possible precautionary measures from its side.
“The Government of Meghalaya, the BSF, and all concerned agencies are extremely alert,” he said. The Chief Minister disclosed that a high-level internal security review meeting was held on December 24, involving the BSF, the Intelligence Bureau and other senior officials, to assess the overall security situation. No public statement was issued following the meeting due to the sensitive nature of internal security matters, but monitoring has remained continuous since then, he added.

Sangma said there is currently nothing major to cause concern but stressed that sustained vigilance is essential given the strategic importance of the international border. On border infrastructure, the Chief Minister said fencing has been completed along most stretches of the boundary, with only about 30–40 km remaining unfenced in scattered pockets, mainly in West Jaintia Hills and parts of South Garo Hills. He attributed the delays to land acquisition problems, resistance from local residents, and pending court cases.

However, Sangma said many of these hurdles were addressed during a review held around four months ago, and progress has since picked up. The Centre is closely monitoring the remaining work, and he said he is in regular touch with authorities in New Delhi. “We are moving very aggressively on this, and I hope the remaining work will be completed soon,” the Chief Minister added.
