Meghalaya District Bans Illegal Fish Transportation from Bangladesh

The Eastern West Khasi Hills district administration in Meghalaya has issued a prohibitory order to prevent illegal influx of migrants and transportation of fish from Bangladesh through border routes, riverine channels, roads and market points. Exercising powers under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, District Magistrate of Eastern West Khasi Hills, A. Karpoor, has banned the transportation, storage, sale and distribution of fish illegally imported from Bangladesh without valid documents. The use of any vehicle, vessel or other means for such activities, as well as aiding or facilitating the illegal trade, has also been prohibited. The order also strictly warned that if there are any violators they will face action under Section 223 of the BNSS, 2023, along with other applicable laws .The prohibitory order was based on reports and apprehensions that such consignments may enter the district and lead to illegal trade, thereby posing threat to national security, public order, public health and the region’s economic interests.
