The East Khasi Hills Police have begun an investigation into the mysterious death of Bipul Inghi, a security guard at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), who died after an incident reported to have occurred on the university campus earlier this month.
Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said on Monday that the police were informed about the case a few days after Inghi’s death, following inputs from the Ri-Bhoi Police as well as the deceased’s family. Based on a complaint filed by the family, an FIR has been registered at Mawlai Police Station.
According to preliminary information, Inghi is believed to have suffered injuries after falling inside the NEHU campus at around 7:30 pm on January 6. He was subsequently taken to Supercare Hospital in Shillong, where he passed away on January 8.
The SP said the case has been registered as an unnatural death and that the police are awaiting the post-mortem report from Ri-Bhoi district. “The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident on the night of January 6 inside the NEHU campus,” he said.
He added that the inquiry is being handled by the Mawkynroh Police Outpost, and a decision on whether the case will be converted into a murder investigation will be taken after the post-mortem findings and further evidence are examined. The East Khasi Hills Police have also formally requested the post-mortem report from the Ri-Bhoi district authorities.
Earlier, Inghi’s family raised concerns after noticing injury marks and blood clots on his body when it was brought home, which led to doubts about the circumstances of his death. However, the family clarified that they do not suspect any specific individual, including the hospital staff who treated him.
The family has appealed for a fair and comprehensive investigation to establish whether Inghi’s death was due to an accidental fall or involved foul play.
