West Garo Hills Police have arrested four people in connection with the alleged murder of Achik activist Dilseng Sangma at Goalgaon under Rajabala Police Station. The fourth suspect was taken into custody on Sunday, following the earlier arrest of three others.

According to police sources, Sangma was part of a group of ACHIK members who had gone to inspect and shut down an illegal stone quarry when they were attacked by miscreants. Sangma later succumbed to his injuries.

Following the incident, tensions rose in the area, prompting swift action by the district police, which led to the arrests. However, the owner of the illegal quarry remains at large, having fled before police could reach his residence. To maintain law and order, peace meetings are being held in Tura, Phulbari, and Rajabala, and the situation has been brought under control. Officials said raids and search operations are continuing to ensure all those involved are brought to justice.

Meanwhile, the West Garo Hills Forest Department has launched a major crackdown on illegal stone quarries and brick kilns in the district in the wake of Sangma’s killing. The operation, being carried out jointly with the district administration and police, targets quarries operating in violation of the Meghalaya Minor Mineral Concession Rules (MMMCR), 2016. Since January 8, raids have been conducted in areas such as Pipulbari, Tangaon, and Rajabala, where unauthorized extraction of minor minerals was reported. The drive has led to the seizure of machinery, equipment, and vehicles used in illegal mining, with legal action to be initiated against those found guilty under relevant provisions of the MMMCR.
