Meghalaya’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded an end to all illegal mining activities in response to the tragic murder of activist Dilseng M Sangma, who was attacked during an inspection of an illegal stone quarry in West Garo Hills. State BJP spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang condemned Sangma’s killing, attributed to individuals allegedly engaged in illegal mining, and emphasized the urgent need for firm actions to prevent future tragedies. Kharkrang called for a thorough investigation into the illegal mining sector across Meghalaya, stating that the incident highlights the persistent issue of unlawful mining in the region.

He demanded that the state’s administration take significant measures beyond mere arrests, ensuring that all perpetrators of illegal mining are identified and prosecuted. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma was urged to implement comprehensive strategies to eradicate illegal mining permanently. Kharkrang referenced past violent incidents related to illegal mining in the Jaintia and Khasi Hills, underscoring the ongoing threat such activities pose to public safety.

The Voice of the People Party (VPP) also condemned the assault and expressed its condolences to Sangma’s family. VPP spokesperson Dr Batskhem Myrboh called for authorities to ensure justice for the involved parties. The killing is reported to be connected to a dispute over illegal stone quarrying near Goalgaon, with local police closely monitoring the situation to avoid further escalation as investigations continue into both the murder and the quarrying conflicts.
