Police in East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya have initiated a suo motu case regarding the death of Ashok Tamang, a worker who suffered severe burn injuries in an alleged dynamite explosion last month. The Superintendent of Police, Vikash Kumar, indicated that the case is registered under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, concerning culpable homicide not amounting to murder, following Tamang’s death on January 1, 2026, during treatment at Shillong Civil Hospital.
The police’s case relies on Tamang’s dying declaration, which recounted the explosion occurring while he was handling dynamite at work, without specifying the involvement of coal mining or pinpointing the incident’s location. Kumar noted that Tamang remains the only recognized fatality, and the ongoing investigation will probe his workplace and the circumstances surrounding his handling of explosives.
Initial inquiries have also cast doubt on the connection between the incident and Thangsko village. Locals, including the village headman, have disavowed familiarity with the people or place depicted in a viral video linked to the incident. Additionally, the Justice (retd) B.P. Katakey Committee, overseeing coal-related issues in the region, has requested a detailed report, affirming that the video and Tamang’s death likely need separate investigations.
Tamang was initially treated for burn injuries at the Sutnga Community Health Centre starting December 23, 2025, before being transferred to Shillong Civil Hospital. It has emerged that police were not notified by the Sutnga facility and learned about the incident through the police outpost at the hospital. The authorities have committed to a thorough investigation to clarify the events leading to the tragedy.
In parallel, the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has responded to reports of a dynamite blast at Thangsko village, which allegedly resulted in two deaths. MHRC secretary L. Ch. Marak has instructed Chief Secretary Shakil P. Ahammed to undertake a thorough inquiry and provide a detailed report within a month. Despite claims from various social media sources and reports suggesting two fatalities, including a potential victim possibly identified as a Bangladeshi national, authorities have so far confirmed only Tamang’s death.
