Amid Bangladesh Unrest, KSU Points to Border Security Failures

Estimated read time 1 min read

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has raised concerns regarding the guarding of Meghalaya’s international boundary in light of instability in Bangladesh. General secretary Donald Thabah emphasized the need for heightened vigilance among all KSU units, particularly those near the border, due to the potential for illegal entries through both direct crossings and indirect routes. He reported previous instances of infiltration in areas distant from the border, questioning the effectiveness of current border security measures despite the presence of security forces. Thabah criticized the government’s assurances of increased security as lacking sustained enforcement, contributing to Meghalaya’s status as an influx-affected state. He highlighted that mechanisms like the Inner Line Permit (ILP) require strict enforcement for effective border security. The KSU intends to remain proactive in identifying illegal entries and has urged the government to address these incidents transparently, framing illegal immigration as a national security issue that necessitates serious government action to safeguard the borders.
