Estimated read time 1 min read

The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) has advocated for the establishment of a national anti-racism law and expedited justice in response to the tragic murder of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura. This incident is perceived as part of a disturbing trend of racial violence targeting individuals from the Northeast in various regions throughout India. In its statement, CoMSO expressed profound condolences and frustration over Chakma’s death, emphasizing that such violent acts are reflective of a deeper systemic bias faced by Northeastern communities, particularly in metropolitan areas like Bengaluru, Delhi, and Dehradun. Additionally, the organization urged the Central government to instruct all state governments to create a dedicated 24/7 ‘North East Helpline’ and establish specialized police units in significant cities to protect the safety of students and professionals from the Northeast. CoMSO further asserted that educational institutions and local authorities should be deemed accountable for their failure to provide a secure and inclusive environment for these individuals.
