Meghalaya Regional Party Urges Government to Restart Peace Talks with HNLC

Meghalaya’s United Democratic Party (UDP) has called on the state government to restart peace negotiations with the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), highlighting the critical need for peace and security in the region. This appeal follows a recent incident where an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated at the Dhar Construction Company camp near Shymplong village in the East Jaintia Hills district on December 15. Although the explosion damaged a water tanker, there were no reported injuries or casualties, yet it has raised concerns about the HNLC’s intentions to reclaim its influence. UDP general secretary Titosstarwell Chyne addressed the media, recalling previous peace talks with the HNLC that had made some progress but ultimately faltered, with the reasons behind the breakdown remaining unclear. He emphasized the party’s request for HNLC leadership to return to discussions, stressing that it is essential for the state’s peace and stability. Chyne expressed optimism that the state government would actively seek to encourage the HNLC to recommence negotiations.
