In relation to an improvised explosive device attack that destroyed a water tanker truck at a construction firm near Shymplong village in the East Jaintia Hills district on December 15, Meghalaya police have detained two persons. An FIR filed at the Lumshnong Police Station on December 16 served as the basis for the arrests. Although there were no recorded casualties or injuries, forensic analysis verified the use of an IED. Police connected the plot to a member of the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) after seizing weapons and explosives.
Richard Suchen, 31, and Pynshaitbor Syih, 45, both of whom live in Shymplong village, were arrested and accused under several provisions of the Explosive Substances Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. According to Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar, a third suspect, Smiki Tongper, has been identified as the accused mastermind behind the attack’s planning and execution. Tongper is thought to have planned the attack with the two people who were arrested as well as an unidentified HNLC member. In addition, she is sought in relation to a another case that was filed at the Khliehriat Woman Police Station and involves accusations under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
Three rolls of safety fuse, three detonators with six empty caps, gunpowder, 82 metal splinters, a domestic rifle, and two Baofeng wireless phones were among the important pieces of evidence found during a search of Tongper’s home.
