Leadership Crisis at NEHU Tura: Students Rally Behind Pro Vice-Chancellor

Students at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Tura campus have raised serious concerns regarding administrative neglect and corruption within the upper leadership of the university. In response to an ongoing leadership dispute, the Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) and the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) NEHU Tura Campus Cell issued a joint statement backing the Pro Vice-Chancellor (PVC), Prof FK Marak, amidst accusations of mismanagement and corruption from higher-ups. The unions emphasized that her appointment was legally sanctioned by the Executive Council in May 2025, in accordance with the NEHU Act of 1973, and they view her leadership as crucial for ensuring stability at the campus.

The student unions have made a collective decision to prevent the resignation of the PVC, citing confidence in her ability to lead and voicing concerns that any void in administration would severely impact the student body. They highlighted the precarious situation at Tura campus where there has been a lack of recognized leadership and representation for nearly four years. Additionally, they accused the Vice-Chancellor of circumventing standard appointment procedures by designating a “Campus Director” with restricted powers, which has detrimental effects on both academic and administrative functions. The unions pointed out that the campus is operating with only two regular officers, the rest being non-permanent or contractual staff, which exacerbates the challenges faced by students and undermines the institutional integrity.
