Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday launched the city beautification drive at Mawlai Mawroh in Shillong. Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sangma, said the city beautification drive is a continuation of the efforts of the government through the urban affairs department and the municipalities to make the cities and towns of the state clean, green, safe and beautiful. “I am happy to see that our efforts are moving in the right direction with the active participation of the communities and localities,” he said.
Referring to the previous meeting with Rangbah Shnongs and different stakeholders of the society on the beautification project wherein a lot of localities had raised the need for CCTVs in their localities, the Chief Minister said, “I am happy to inform that today we are inaugurating the CCTV system and, out of the 45 localities shortlisted in the first phase, installation has been completed in 25 localities and work in the other 20 locations will be completed soon.” He also informed that the installation of CCTVs and streetlights was a continuous process and more locations would be taken up in the second phase.
The Chief Minister also stated that it is very important for the communities and the government to work together to bring about a visible and tangible transformation. “There is nothing such as a small or a big development project and even the smallest change we make can make a big difference in the overall process of development,” he said. Sangma further said that governance becomes more effective when there is interaction and communication at the grassroots. He opened the floor for interaction and discussion where headmen of various localities of Shillong highlighted their localities’ needs for street lights, CCTVs, parking spaces, footpaths for pedestrians, water supply, clogged drains, etc. The Chief Minister also distributed the beautification grants to the localities and also inaugurated the CCTV installation for Mawlai Mawroh.
