International Day of Persons with Disabilities Commemorated in Meghalaya

The Meghalaya government marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at the U Soso Tham Auditorium in Shillong. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma emphasized that a society’s true measure lies in its care for those facing challenges. He noted the state’s focus has shifted from charity to rights and dignity for individuals with disabilities. The Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project, featuring the Eastern Brook Band composed of disabled musicians, showcases the state’s narrative globally, alongside the launch of the first Disability Anthem which serves as a symbol of hope. The state has facilitated access to education for neurodivergent students through an inclusive debate competition and has supported 30 PwD entrepreneurs with funding.

Sangma mentioned the organization of the first blind football tournament promoting solidarity, and the full implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, which has made 41 government buildings and 84 government websites accessible. The award-winning Meghalaya Sign Bank App provides digital inclusion. The community-based rehabilitation network spans all districts, offering essential services to 32,000 PwDs, with merit-based scholarships benefiting 370 students. The Chief Minister highlighted the state’s pioneering efforts in integrating mental well-being into governance, celebrating individuals with disabilities who inspire in their fields. During EMPOWERFEST 3.0, he recognized PwD achievers and presented awards for the Inclusive Film Festival. The occasion also included the inauguration of a K-9 Sniffer Dogs Unit and an MoU with Sankaradeva College for a state-wide drugs survey.
