Tata Trusts Power Struggle Set To Explode

Estimated read time 1 min read

A major rift has emerged within Tata Trusts — the charitable body that controls around 66% of Tata Sons — after Noel Tata, Venu Srinivasan, and Vijay Singh reportedly voted against extending Mehli Mistry’s trusteeship. Mistry, who recently supported Srinivasan’s appointment as a life trustee, may have expected similar backing. Sources told NDTV Profit he could now consider legal action. A resolution passed last year had allowed trustees to be reappointed for life, but insiders told PTI that such renewals must be unanimous, meaning Mistry’s life-term extension required full board approval.

If the vote holds, Mistry could be ousted from the board, deepening divisions that analysts warn might threaten the Tata Group’s stability. The conflict traces back to a September 11 board meeting, where a proposal to reappoint Vijay Singh as a nominee-director to Tata Sons was blocked by Mistry and three others. Speculation also suggests Mistry’s faction is challenging Noel Tata’s leadership, prompting senior officials to urge reconciliation and preserve institutional unity within the Rs 25-lakh-crore conglomerate.
