Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, announced on X that ChatGPT will open its first office in New Delhi later this year, highlighting India’s rapid AI adoption as user numbers have quadrupled in the past year. India is now OpenAI’s second-largest market by user base, according to Reuters. The company has legally registered in India and started building a local team. This week, OpenAI also introduced its most affordable monthly plan at $4.60, aiming to reach India’s vast internet population.

Altman praised India’s potential to lead globally in AI, citing its tech talent, strong developer ecosystem, and government backing through the IndiaAI Mission. He called the new office a key step in making AI more accessible and building AI “for India, and with India.”

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed the move, stating it reinforces India’s growing digital and AI leadership. Despite the excitement, OpenAI faces strong competition in India from players like Google’s Gemini and Perplexity AI, which offer advanced features for free to attract users.
