Vi Business, the enterprise arm of Vodafone Idea Limited, has announced an ambitious plan to deploy 12 million smart meters across India by 2028—a move that is expected to play a transformative role in India’s evolving energy economy. The initiative aligns with the India Smart Grid Mission and is aimed at reducing Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses while promoting real-time energy monitoring and billing accuracy.
This deployment will leverage Vi’s IoT Smart Central platform, featuring advanced analytics, remote control, and telco-grade security protocols. With over five years of smart meter management experience and a dedicated IoT Lab for pre-deployment testing, Vi Business has positioned itself as a key enabler of India’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) roadmap.
Economists view this as a significant step in optimizing resource efficiency and reducing distribution inefficiencies in both urban and semi-urban markets. Where power demand is rising alongside rapid infrastructure growth, the introduction of smart meters is expected to modernize the grid, reduce losses, and enable transparent billing—thus attracting greater investment into the energy sector.
