Meghalaya has become one of the few states in the country to provide direct financial assistance to street vendors. Deputy Chief Minister Snaiwbhalang Dhar and Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh handed over Rs 10,000 relocation cheques to hawkers at Khyndailad, marking a significant milestone in the government’s urban decongestion and rehabilitation efforts. The initiative will provide a Rs 20,000 support package to 282 hawkers relocated to the MUDA Complex, including Rs 10,000 upfront and Rs 2,000 per month for five months. Basic facilities are also being arranged at the new vending site. Over 200 hawkers in Meghalaya are receiving financial assistance from the state government.
Deputy Chief Minister Snaiwbhalang Dhar stated that the government is distributing cheques and will transfer the rest online. The state is also improving infrastructure in the vending zone, providing electricity, water, and toilets. Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh praised the initiative as a landmark achievement, stating that the state is one of the few to offer cash incentives for 282 hawkers to relocate, including amenities like drinking water and washrooms. The move marks a significant victory for the hawkers and the padestrianisation of Khyndailad. The administration’s determination to transform Shillong’s busiest area into a well-planned, pedestrian-friendly urban area was further demonstrated by the spot inspections that both ministers carried out of the recently cleared Khyndailad stretch and the hawkers’ market.
