Following its success in national competitions, Meghalaya is witnessing a boom in the usage of kettlebell training, a well-liked fitness tool, because of its many advantages, including increased strength, cardiovascular fitness, core stability, and coordination. At the Online National Kettlebell Sport Championship in April, Meghalaya’s kettlebell squad took home nine gold, three silver, and one bronze medal. The squad, led by Sandeep Sharma, seeks to improve mental toughness, endurance, and functional strength. At KC Secondary School in Shillong, Sharma is also in charge of the athletics program, which places a strong emphasis on long-term athletic development at the school level. Twenty students, mostly aspiring karate, football, and boxing athletes as well as others just for fun or curiosity, have begun kettlebell training at the school.

Principal Bryan Wahlang advocates for the program, stating it instills discipline, balance, and focus from a young age. Coach Sandeep’s involvement has been a game-changer, and students have seen improved focus, confidence, and dietary habits. Kettlebell training has been credited by many athletes in Meghalaya for improving their performance and lifestyle. Cricketer Luiza Tamang reported improved core strength and endurance, cyclist Lankupar Diengdoh reported enhanced mobility, and advocate Sonia Langstieh felt stronger and freer. Kettlebell training is seen as a foundation-building tool. Kettlebells, originally from Russia, are gaining popularity in India due to their simplicity, versatility, and ability to replicate real-world athletic movements.
