6 Illegal Houses Demolished In Garo Hills

In a move reflecting Assam’s tough approach toward illegal encroachments, the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) has launched an uncompromising eviction drive against illegal settlers near the Assam–Meghalaya border, demolishing six unauthorized structures in areas under its jurisdiction adjacent to Assam’s Goalpara district.

GHADC Deputy Chief Executive Member Nikman Ch Marak confirmed that the council conducted the eviction operation, targeting settlers who had overstayed despite repeated notices and failed to provide proof of citizenship or state of origin. “We served them notices for two years, but they didn’t respond or verify their identity, so we proceeded with the eviction,” said Marak.

As Assam intensifies its state-wide eviction efforts, concerns have grown about a potential spillover into Meghalaya. Marak acknowledged the risk but assured that GHADC has strengthened monitoring and mobilized local administrative units, including Nokmas and headmen, to keep a close watch and report directly to the council.

He emphasized that anyone unable to prove their legitimacy would face removal. “The council is ready to take action whenever such situations arise,” Marak affirmed.
