Several northeastern states have issued high alerts along their borders with Assam, fearing an influx of displaced individuals following the Assam government’s recent eviction drives, officials reported on Saturday. Assam shares 2,616.1 km of inter-state borders with Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, and West Bengal. The eviction operations, intensified in districts like Dhubri, Goalpara, Lakhimpur, and Kamrup (Metro), are targeting encroachments on government and forest lands, displacing thousands.

In response, states like Nagaland, Manipur, and Meghalaya have instructed district authorities and police to prevent the entry of displaced persons. In Tripura, Tipra Motha Party (TMP) leader Pradyot Debbarma urged the TTAADC to form a cross-party monitoring committee to detect illegal immigrants. The TTAADC governs two-thirds of Tripura’s area, home to a predominantly tribal population.

Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio ordered enhanced surveillance along the Assam-Nagaland border. Deputy CM Y. Patton visited sensitive areas and commended border vigilance efforts. Over 200 vehicles carrying evictees were intercepted and turned back by Niuland authorities. Meanwhile, violence during an eviction in Goalpara led to one death and one injury.
