Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma has expressed confidence that Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma will pursue the proposal to extend railway connectivity to Baghmara. He believes that introducing railways in the region will open up economic avenues and help address growing unemployment.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Rakkam Sangma shared that he had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, suggesting the railway extension from Mendipathar to Baghmara, possibly via Nongalbibra or through Tura, Tikrikilla, and Dalu.
He stated that the Chief Minister is expected to take up the proposal with the Central Government, acknowledging its potential to boost Meghalaya’s economy. Highlighting historical trade links with erstwhile East Pakistan, he noted how connectivity in the region was disrupted after India’s partition.
The minister emphasized that the railway link could enhance access to markets in Bangladesh, promoting local resources and cultural goods. He said this initiative would create jobs, stimulate industries like tourism, agriculture, and transport, and reduce reliance on government employment.
However, opposition persists in parts of Meghalaya due to concerns over an influx of outsiders, with pressure groups demanding protective measures like the Inner Line Permit before approving railway projects in the Khasi-Jaintia region.
