The state government on Sunday assured that the under-construction bridge downstream of the Umiam Dam has been structurally engineered to withstand risks related to water discharge from the dam. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who also oversees the Public Works Department (PWD-Roads), stated that all necessary assessments were carried out before construction began.
He noted that engineers and architects accounted for key hydrological factors, including overflow scenarios from the Umiam reservoir. This statement comes in response to rising public concerns about the bridge’s close proximity to the dam and potential vulnerability during high discharge periods.
To mitigate such risks, the bridge’s height has been elevated to ensure both commuter safety and structural integrity. Situated around 100 metres from the dam, the bridge is part of a larger road infrastructure upgrade.
Tynsong also provided an update on the alternate road connecting Mawlai Bypass to Umroi, saying one of its bridges is nearly 90% complete. Although the December 2025 deadline may extend to early 2026, he remains hopeful the route will be operational by March 2026, easing congestion and improving connectivity.
