The U.S. designation of The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), as a global terrorist organisation has been welcomed by senior Congress leader and former diplomat Shashi Tharoor. The Thiruvananthapuram MP expressed optimism that the move would intensify global pressure on Pakistan to act against terror outfits operating from its territory.
On platform X, Tharoor praised the U.S. State Department’s decision, calling it a step that increases pressure on Pakistan to rein in terror groups like TRF, which claimed responsibility for the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people.
Sharing insights from recent discussions in Washington, Tharoor noted that U.S. officials cited Pakistan’s alleged cooperation in counter-terror operations—particularly the surrender of a suspect in the Abbey Gate bombing—as justification for leniency.
He emphasised the need for consistent global action, urging support for India’s efforts to list TRF at the UN.
The U.S. action, announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, was seen as a major development in India-U.S. counter-terror cooperation and a move toward greater accountability for state sponsors of terrorism.
